Mobile workers are expected to account for nearly 75% of the total U.S. workforce by 2020, and they’ll want to access their work data and applications from any device, anywhere, anytime. At the same time, BYOD can create IT security and management risks.

Desktop as a Service helps you find a balance – keep IT secure and manageable and your employees productive and happy.

Why Desktop as a Service with onTop

  • Boost productivity and employee satisfaction
As employees come to expect more and more flexibility, and as business becomes increasingly global, productivity and satisfaction depend on mobility. With desktop as a service, you can support a mobile, BYOD environment – employees can access their desktops on whatever hardware they choose, wherever they are, whenever they want – without increasing security risks and management headaches.

  • Reduce infrastructure costs
Desktop as a service is not just a way to enable a mobile BYOD workforce. It’s also a way to reduce costs – infrastructure costs, and support costs. For one, it allows you to extend the PC refresh cycle from 3-4 years to 6-8 years – cutting your replacement rate (and cost) in half. DaaS also minimizes the time your IT team spends on help desk support. (“Repairing a desktop is as easy as refreshing it with a new virtual machine (VM). There is no downtime, no lost productivity because of users waiting for desktop to be fixed, and no lost revenue.”) Enabling a mobile workforce with hosted desktops, you can also reduce overhead costs – two days per week working remotely could save a 250-employee firm $300,000 a year in real estate cost alone.

  • Increase data security
When data and applications are stored on the hard drive, the security risks associated with lost PCs is huge. (And PCs are lost often.) When data and applications – the desktop – are accessed as a service through the cloud, lost devices don’t pose the same security risk. BYOD can also create management headaches for IT teams called to manage devices that are largely out of their control. Desktop as a services takes away the management complexity while maintaining BYOD mobility and optionality.

  • Speed up (and simplify) PC deployment
“The quest for organizational agility and flexibility is a key driver in such trends as hiring temporary workers or consultants for short-term opportunities, and DaaS gives organizations the ability to provide all necessary desktops rights and resources in a matter of hours.” The ease of deployment simplifies and speeds up mergers and acquisitions as well – a significant competitive advantage for companies that grow by M&A.

Desktop as a Service – Q&A with the onTop Team

A: Currently we only offer Windows Desktops.
A: Streaming is possible depending on bandwidth but typically not recommended. Typically streaming audio/video interferes with the desktop experience.
A: Yes they are, but depending on location, latency may be much greater than it is in the United States. Latency is the major factor in a usable experience so tests may need to be conducted beforehand if this is a requirement.
A: You will be able to connect to the desktop using a client either installed on your system or through a web page. There are also Terminals that allow you to connect to your desktop without the added cost of an actual PC.
A: Images can be deployed in numerous ways. One would be to create a standard image and mass create desktops based off of it. This will allow rollout to be easier and updates more efficient. Other desktops can be created in a persistent manner where each user has their own and changes they make are permanent.
A: We utilize folder redirection and roaming profiles to make sure your settings are as you set them each time you log in.
A: There are many options for this as we can host a file server for you or integrate within your own environment. You also have the option to copy data locally if need be.

Rave Reviews

While there are numerous hosting providers to choose from, we found that only onTop Technology Corp had “above and beyond” personalized service backed by the integrity of a Tier III certified data center. By partnering with onTop, we were able to greatly enhance our IT infrastructure.

Here at BidTracer we have developed a cloud based software for construction. Many of the challenges these days of having the expertise on staff at our company has been answered by onTop’s knowledgeable staff. They have set up our phone system integrated with Microsoft Lync and made it a seamless switch over. They are there throughout the whole process and you can tell they take pride in their work.

We grow by acquiring new stations. Each time, I have to integrate the station into the corporate network, which takes three to four days. onTop is working on a ‘station-in-a-box’ idea that will enable a new station to literally plug right in. onTop is helping us figure out how to better scale.
SPARROW relies on onTop for help managing infrastructure costs. That’s strategic. If you can’t manage your infrastructure cost it affects overall profitability.
Matanda Doss, SPARROW
Whereas the old IT vendor delivered an ‘out-of-the-box’ solution – that is, more capacity – onTop helped us figure out how to put our IT capacity to best use. They helped us align our IT infrastructure to our business objectives. That has been a critical element in our successful growth.

If we can’t be scalable and highly available then we lose customers. Our strategy is of course to keep them. onTop helps us do that.
Matanda Doss, SPARROW
Before onTop, we were with a provider that didn’t really care about how we used – or even if we used – the capacity they had sold us. To increase our compute capacity we had to buy CPU, RAM, etc. in ‘buckets’ whether we needed it or not. In order to get what we needed of one thing, we ended up overbuying in other areas. That’s good for the seller, not so much for us.
Mark White, AppointmentPlus
Your infrastructure is the foundation for your operations success. By leveraging a scalable solution you can focus almost exclusively on the operation of your company and the growth model you have. The hardware limitations in a self-hosted environment are removed with a partner such as onTop.

Business growth today is driven as much if not more by growing profit margins than by growing revenue. IT plays an instrumental role in that growth.
